Picturesque villages
It's not just natural beauty that makes Carinthia so enticing. You can also find beautifully preserved towns and villages in the state. The two largest towns are Klagenfurt on Lake Wörthersee and Villach on Lake Ossiach have a beautiful historic centre with old churches and interesting museums. If you visit one of these two cities, be sure to visit a restaurant as well. Carinthia has typical Austrian cuisine with Adriatic influences. For example, try the Kärntner Nudeln, a local delicacy.
Apart from Klagenfurt and Villach, you will find a large number of smaller towns in Carinthia. These include captivating medieval villages like Friesach, Sankt Veit and Gurk; mountain villages like Heiligenblut and picturesque lakeside villages like Millstatt, Ossiach, Velden and Maria Wörth. Scattered throughout the state, you will also find worthwhile castles and monasteries, including Burg Hochosterwitz and the almost 1,000-year-old monastery of St Paul in the Lavanttal. Both are worth a visit.
